Official: Komuls to play in Sweden's top league next season
Latvian defenceman Krišjānis Komuls, 28, has joined Swedish club HV71, which needed reinforcements on defence just two weeks before the new season starts.
Swedish hockey club HV71 has signed 28-year-old Latvian defenceman Krišjānis Komuls, the club has confirmed. The move was first reported by Swedish newspaper "Expressen", which did not specify the length of the contract.
The club decided to add a new player because it currently has only six defencemen available, while the new season is set to begin in just two weeks.
A turbulent previous season
Komuls began last season with Finnish top-league club HIFK, but failed to register a point in his single appearance there and did not pass his trial period. He then moved to Czech Extraliga club Litvínov's Verva, where he scored two goals and added eight assists in 28 games.
A decade in North America
Komuls moved to North America in 2014, turning professional in the 2022/2023 season with ECHL club Trois-Rivières Lions, where he spent a season and a half. In total, he has spent ten seasons in North America.
He started the 2024/2025 season with Slovak club Nové Zámky and finished it with Czech club Kladno Rytíři. Komuls has represented the Latvian national team at two world championships.
HV71 finished last season in second-to-last, 13th place in the regular tournament, retaining its spot in the top division only via playoffs.
