On the evening of 3 October, police in Aizupe, a part of Ogre in Latvia, checked a man whose Audi car had become stuck in mud near Lake Mežezers. Officers suspected he was under the influence of narcotic or psychotropic substances, and the State Police have opened a criminal case.

The call-out to Mežezera Street

Shortly before 8 p.m., police received a report that the driver of an Audi, possibly intoxicated by alcohol, had driven into water on Mežezera Street, behind the Ogre Forestry Technical School. Officers who arrived found that the car was not in water: it had driven along a worn path through landscaped greenery near the lake and become stuck in mud. The engine was running, and a man sat inside, who confirmed that he had been driving and had got the car stuck.

Municipal police officers had not themselves seen the car being driven.

Suspicion of intoxication

No alcohol was detected in the man's breath. However, his behaviour gave rise to suspicion that he might be under the influence of psychotropic or narcotic substances. Two witnesses who had called the police were also at the scene. They said the man had behaved inappropriately, in a way typical of intoxication.

The State Police were notified. The man agreed to stay at the scene voluntarily and wait for them, but said he would refuse any kind of examination. A plastic bag of plants that visually resembled marijuana was also found on him.

When State Police officers arrived, they took over the work at the scene and opened a criminal case.
