Woman brings axe to Ogre social service office after benefit denial

A dangerous incident occurred at the Ogre Municipality Social Service on August 6, when an agitated woman arrived at the office carrying an axe. The case was reported by the local outlet "Ogres Vēstis Visiem."

The call to the Social Service office on Upes Avenue came in around midday. Staff told police the woman explained she had brought the axe because she had been informed the previous day that her application for a support-person service had been denied.

Employees told police the woman has a psychiatric health condition. At the time, the office contained the woman herself, her mother and her husband. One social worker told police the woman tried to attack her with the axe, but the woman's husband managed to take the weapon away. No one sustained injuries.

Woman hospitalized

State Police officers and an emergency medical team responded to the scene. After examining the woman, medics decided, with police assistance, to hospitalize her at the Riga Psychiatric and Narcology Centre. The decision was made because her aggressive and unpredictable behavior could have endangered both herself and those around her.
