Man arrested on suspicion of murder after body found near Alderney coast
Police on the Channel Island of Alderney have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a body was discovered near the coast, the first such case on the island in 15 years.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder on the small Channel Island of Alderney after a body was found close to the coastline. A police spokesperson, Bancroft, said formal identification of the deceased had not yet taken place.
Bancroft described the investigation as fast moving and appealed to the public to avoid speculating while initial inquiries continue.
Cordon set up, high street quiet
Around 14:00 BST, police had a cordon in place at a location known as The Guns. Meanwhile, the high street in St Anne — the island's only town — was notably quiet, with several shops closed for the day.
According to police, this marks the first suspected murder case on Alderney in 15 years.
A small community shaken
BBC reporter Josh Day said the incident had a noticeable impact on the island's small community. Walking through the high street, he said the effect was palpable: the area was quiet, a number of shops had shut, and a sombre mood hung over the town. One local resident described the day as a very sad one for the island.
