Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall injured in car collision
Long jump Olympic and world champion Tara Davis-Woodhall was involved in a car collision on Wednesday while driving to training and suffered bruising. Her participation in the season-ending championships in Budapest later this month is now in doubt.
American long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall, the reigning Paris Olympics gold medalist and world champion in her event, was involved in a road accident on Wednesday while on her way to a training session. Another driver reportedly swerved directly into her path, causing a head-on collision at a speed of roughly 32 kilometers per hour.
The 27-year-old athlete sustained severe bruising in the crash but escaped without life-threatening injuries.
Season finale participation in doubt
As a result of the accident, it now appears unlikely that Davis-Woodhall will be able to compete in the newly launched season-ending event, the "Ultimate Championships," set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from September 11 to 13. The inaugural competition is designed to bring together Diamond League leaders as well as world and Olympic champions, with a strong focus on television audiences. The event carries a total prize pool of ten million US dollars, with winners in each discipline receiving 150,000 dollars.
A strong season
In mid-June, Davis-Woodhall recorded the best women's long jump result of the season worldwide, reaching 7.20 meters. Her closest rival, Italy's Larissa Iapichino, trails by eight centimeters.
