OpenAI, the US artificial intelligence company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, is preparing to merge two tabs of its ChatGPT desktop app, Chat and Work, into one experience. The company told users about the plan in an email, and tech outlet TechCrunch reported it on 2 November. The change affects how people use the chatbot and its work features, and appears aimed at making the app less confusing.

Why the change

The desktop app currently has separate ChatGPT and Codex sections, and the ChatGPT section is itself split into Chat and Work tabs. With so many options, users can lose track of where they are working and where a given project is stored. The merger looks like an attempt to reduce that confusion.

What is promised

At first, the new experience will be offered only to select users so OpenAI can gather feedback, with a wider rollout to follow. According to the email, users will be able to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place. They can bring in their files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation or do tasks on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex, OpenAI's coding tool, will remain a separate experience within the desktop app.

Changes to usage limits

OpenAI also said that after the transition, ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool. The company said most users will not be affected, but depending on usage and the model chosen, some may have to wait for limit resets more often.

Competition

Rival Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI assistant, merged Claude's chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September.
