OpenAI set to unveil AI agent Aeon as it races to catch rivals
OpenAI is expected to unveil a new, continuously running AI agent called Aeon at its DevDay event on Tuesday, aiming to catch up with rivals like Meta's Muse and Google's Gemini Spark. The push comes amid rising interest in such agents alongside growing security concerns.
OpenAI, which popularized the modern generative AI chatbot, now finds itself playing catch-up in one of the industry's hottest categories: continuously running, consumer-facing AI agents. At its annual DevDay event on Tuesday, the company is expected to unveil a new product, reportedly named Aeon.
AI agents — systems capable of booking travel, shopping for groceries, scheduling appointments, and assisting with work tasks — have been an industry goal for years. OpenAI demoed agentic features as early as its 2024 DevDay, but the real shift from proof of concept to practical use only came late last year with the rise of OpenClaw. Since then, competition has accelerated while OpenAI's visible progress has lagged.
Strong competitors
OpenAI's primary rival right now is Meta, whose agent Muse has topped US App Store charts since its release earlier this month and reached 600,000 daily active users. Early reviews describe it as useful but somewhat unsettling. Another contender, Instinct, has gained attention for its ease of use, including the ability to chat with it through iMessage and other messaging apps. Google, meanwhile, offers Gemini Spark, which connects to more than 30 external services such as Dropbox, Uber, and Spotify.
According to various accounts, these agents are already helping people fill out paperwork for doctor visits, cancel subscriptions, organize group trips, and pay bills. But security concerns are mounting as well — at least one known vulnerability allowed attackers to take control of accounts, and users have complained that Muse disclosed a home address without permission and read private messages.
Little is currently known about Aeon, though OpenAI employs OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger, who is likely contributing his expertise. The new agent will reportedly be powered by OpenAI's latest model, GPT-6 Astra, which the company has described as a major step toward artificial general intelligence. Still, OpenAI lacks the broad service ecosystem that Meta and Google can offer, and has previously tried to close that gap through ChatGPT app integrations. Aeon may be just one of several announcements expected at DevDay, alongside possible updates to AI hardware and its language models.
