OpenAI may announce a ChatGPT smart speaker this year
According to a Bloomberg report, OpenAI's first hardware product will be a screenless smart speaker that lets users talk to ChatGPT. The device is expected in 2027 as part of a broader lineup of about five devices.

OpenAI’s first hardware device is reportedly a smart speaker that allows users to converse with ChatGPT, according to Bloomberg. The device will lack a screen but will include a camera and additional sensors to “understand” the user’s environment. It will feature a rechargeable battery for portability, smart home controls, media playback, and the ability to answer questions and respond to messages. The speaker will run on GPT-Live, OpenAI’s upgraded voice model revealed last week.
Bloomberg also reports that the device will incorporate “mechanical elements that can move on their own” to “connect on a humanlike level with users.” In February, The Information described a similar device equipped with a camera capable of recognizing objects or people.
The rumored speaker is slated for a 2027 launch as part of OpenAI’s broader hardware plans, which currently include “roughly” five devices. OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive on these devices following its nearly $6.5 billion acquisition of his design firm, io Products.
Separately, Apple recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI company of stealing hardware secrets. In a statement Tuesday, OpenAI said it is “not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit.” OpenAI is also teasing a Codex Micro gadget made in partnership with Work Louder, scheduled for release on July 15th.
