OpenAI Sells ChatGPT Basketball and Other Merch
OpenAI surprises with a ChatGPT basketball for $70, part of a 'Pause. Play. Prompt.' campaign, along with other merchandise like a $175 quarter-zip with 'research' cursive.

OpenAI, which recently released a $230 mini keyboard, has surprised the public with another unusual product: a ChatGPT basketball. Priced at $70, the ball is made of 100% rubber, making it more suitable for outdoor play than more expensive leather balls used on professional courts.
The product listing states the ball is part of the 'Pause. Play. Prompt.' campaign, a physical reminder that creativity does not live only on screens. However, TechCrunch notes that no other mention of this campaign was found on OpenAI's website.
In addition to the basketball, OpenAI is selling a line of merchandise, including a $175 quarter-zip with 'research' in cursive. The description says it 'features a crisp collar that reminisces on our days in academia.'
The TechCrunch article takes a skeptical tone, questioning who the target customer is and noting that taking a ChatGPT basketball to a community court might invite ridicule. It also remarks that the AI industry is not known for its product-market fit, citing the failure of the Humane AI Pin.
