OpenAI has launched its first piece of hardware, the Micro keypad, developed in collaboration with specialty keyboard designer Work Louder. The device is a compact, sturdy accessory intended to work with ChatGPT and its coding tool Codex. It features six frosted "agent" keys that can be customized for specific tasks, along with six command keys. A voice dictation button allows users to simply speak commands to ChatGPT.

The Micro connects to a computer via Bluetooth or USB cable. Customization is done within the ChatGPT interface, where users can adjust key lighting, commands, and projects. However, user feedback has been mixed. On Reddit, some called it a "prank," while independent outlet Aftermath described it as expensive and annoying. The device costs $230.

While the Micro may appeal to frequent ChatGPT users, newcomers will need time to learn how to use it. The color-coded keys (white for idle, blue for thinking, green for complete, red for error) require memorization. Overall, the Micro is a niche product that may delight enthusiasts but is not an everyday necessity.
