OpenAI removes text chat limits for ChatGPT free users

OpenAI has announced that it is removing limits on text-based chats for ChatGPT users. The move comes as the platform recently surpassed one billion weekly active users. The new GPT-5.6 Luna model will serve as the default for Free and Go subscribers, replacing GPT-5.5. These users will also receive a new "Think" button that allows them to select higher reasoning power for complex questions. However, separate limits remain in place for files, images, voice, and image generation.

The update also affects Plus and Pro users. They will gain access to an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, optimized for quick tasks such as answering questions, conducting web research, offering advice, planning, writing, and making decisions. OpenAI says this model delivers more compact and robust answers. Notably, this version is separate from the GPT-5.6 Sol used for Codex and Work, which remains unchanged.

Plus and Pro subscribers are also getting a thinking slider that adjusts how much effort the model puts into an answer. The slider can be tuned based on the complexity of a query and the number of steps required to solve it.

An internal evaluation by OpenAI found that, compared with GPT-5.5-Instant, factual errors were 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol. The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is available today for Plus and Pro users, while the other changes for Free and Go users are arriving this week. Next week, users will gain access to unlimited text chats and the new Think button for harder questions.
