OpenAI president says company is building 'family of devices' for its AI chatbots
In an interview, OpenAI president Greg Brockman revealed the company is working on a range of devices for interacting with its AI models, though he declined to confirm specific designs or release dates.
OpenAI president Greg Brockman said in an interview on Joanna Stern's YouTube channel that the company is developing a “family of devices” for interacting with its AI models. However, Brockman did not confirm earlier reports that one such device might be a smart speaker slated for 2027, or rumors of a wearable similar to the Humane AI pin. He also did not provide a release date, only stating that “you can expect them soon.”
When asked about Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI concerning its collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive, Brockman said, “We are focused on our own development and technology. We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We are plenty innovative. We are thinking about things from our own angle.”
Discussing the form factor of the new devices, Brockman predicted that in the future, “the vast majority of what we do” will involve speaking to computers rather than typing. He acknowledged the challenge of using voice interfaces in open offices and mentioned soundproof “beak” masks as a sign of product-market fit, even if they are not a long-term solution.
Brockman also addressed trust issues with AI models, citing concerns about privacy in ChatGPT's “temporary chat” mode. He said OpenAI is working on technological solutions to provide “verifiable, auditable guarantees” that only the AI can review users' private data.
