OpenAI shuts down its ChatGPT Atlas browser
OpenAI has announced it will sunset ChatGPT Atlas, its browser capable of performing tasks on behalf of users, less than a year after launch. The deprecation is targeted for August 9th.

OpenAI has officially confirmed the shutdown of ChatGPT Atlas, a browser that could automate tasks for users, less than a year after its launch in October 2024. The company stated that Atlas will be fully deprecated by August 9th.
This move is part of a broader effort to reduce "side quests" and focus on productivity features to catch up with competitor Anthropic. In recent months, OpenAI also shut down the video generation app Sora and paused plans for a ChatGPT "adult mode."
In a thread announcing ChatGPT Work—which includes an updated browser in the desktop ChatGPT app and a cloud browser for work mode—OpenAI's James Sun noted that all these capabilities were built on lessons learned from Atlas users who "took a leap of faith on a new browser." He added that users taught OpenAI how agents can improve browsing and working on the open web, and these learnings are being applied to new products.
