OpenAI has provided Ukraine with a free artificial intelligence tool that helps protect Kyiv's hospitals and power plants from cyberattacks, as Russia continues to strike the same facilities from the air.
American AI company OpenAI has granted Ukraine free access to an automated cybersecurity system designed to defend the country's critical infrastructure, including hospitals and power plants, against hacking attempts.
The system operates autonomously, scanning Kyiv's computer networks on its own to identify vulnerabilities. Once flaws are detected, the tool seals them before intruders have a chance to exploit them, reducing the risk that malicious actors could breach these systems and disrupt their operations.
The move comes as Russia continues to carry out air strikes against the same categories of targets — hospitals and energy facilities — that the AI system is meant to protect digitally. Ukraine's critical infrastructure has repeatedly come under attack throughout the war, making both physical and digital protection increasingly important.
By offering free access to its technology, OpenAI joins a broader group of technology companies that have offered support to Ukraine during the war in the area of digital security. An automated system capable of independently finding and fixing vulnerabilities could ease the burden on Ukrainian cybersecurity teams, who must safeguard vital facilities while those same sites remain under constant threat from missiles and drones.
