OpenAI's AI smart speaker could cost between $300 and $400
OpenAI is reportedly developing a donut-shaped smart speaker powered by ChatGPT, priced between $300 and $400. The device, designed with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio, may launch in 2027 and include moving parts.
New details have emerged about OpenAI's upcoming hardware device, previously described as an AI-powered smart speaker and the "physical manifestation" of ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg, the device will be shaped like a donut so users can carry it around their home and place it on different surfaces, such as a bedside table or kitchen counter.
The speaker is said to be built from high-quality metal with a premium look. Sources also mention distinct "moving parts," though their purpose remains unclear.
Bloomberg reports the device could cost between $300 and $400 per unit. By comparison, most of Amazon's smart home speakers range from $40 on the low end to $240 on the high end. OpenAI's move into the smart home market makes sense as a way to integrate ChatGPT more deeply into users' lives, but smart speakers have historically not always been profitable, and a higher price point may pose an additional challenge.
The product is being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by former Apple design executive Jony Ive. Bloomberg says the device will likely be released sometime in 2027.
OpenAI's hardware push has not been entirely smooth, as Apple has sued the company over allegations of stealing trade secrets. OpenAI has denied the accusations.
