As the Midsummer (Jāņi) holidays approach, Latvian emergency services remind the public of key safety measures to prevent tragic accidents. Every year, calls are received about serious road accidents, drownings, burns, and other incidents that are often preventable.

Road traffic

State Police emphasize that only sober individuals should get behind the wheel. If alcohol will be consumed during celebrations, arrangements for getting home must be made in advance. It is also important to prevent a friend, relative, or acquaintance from driving under the influence. During the holiday, police will increase traffic monitoring nationwide, focusing on drivers under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants. Last year, on Līgo and Jāņi days, 15 people were injured and one died in road accidents.

Fire safety

The State Fire and Rescue Service urges caution with bonfires. Fires should be lit only at a safe distance from buildings, trees, and other objects, and must never be left unattended. After celebrations, the bonfire must be thoroughly extinguished, ensuring no smoldering remains. Last year, firefighters responded to several calls about unattended bonfires or people burning household items and waste in them. Caution is also required with grills and lighter fluid – incorrect handling can cause severe burns in seconds. Only adults should light grills, and lighter fluid must be kept out of children's reach.

Water safety

Special caution is needed near water. Swimming under the influence of alcohol, in unfamiliar places, or alone is dangerous. Services recommend choosing safe swimming spots, not overestimating one's abilities, and constantly supervising children. When engaging in water activities such as boating, catamaran riding, jet skiing, or stand-up paddleboarding, wearing life jackets is advised. For children under 12, a life jacket is mandatory. Last year's holiday period saw two bodies recovered from water bodies.

Medical preparedness and child supervision

The Emergency Medical Service advises checking home medicine supplies before the holidays – specialized burn treatments, sterile bandages, plasters, disinfectants, as well as allergy, pain, and digestive medications should be available. Do not apply sour cream or oil to burn wounds. For minor health issues, people are asked not to call 112 but instead contact the Family Doctor consultation line at 66016001. In case of serious accidents, dial 112 immediately. The services also recommend downloading the app "112 Latvija," which contains safety tips.

Amid the holiday bustle, children are among the most vulnerable, so adults should agree in advance who will supervise them at any given moment. Children should be instructed on how to act in an emergency and when to call the emergency number 112.
