Opposition fails to oust Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs after market scandal
The Riga City Council voted against removing Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs, with 23 in favor and 33 against after more than four hours of debate.

The Riga City Council opposition failed to remove Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs (Progressive Party) from office on Wednesday. After more than four hours of debate, only 23 deputies voted in favor of the opposition's motion to dismiss him, while 33 voted against, allowing Kleinbergs to retain his position.
The opposition sought Kleinbergs' removal over issues related to the Central Market (Centrāltirgus), but the coalition deputies backed the mayor. The decision came after lengthy discussions where various arguments were presented. Ultimately, the majority rejected the proposal, and Kleinbergs continues to serve as the mayor of Riga.
This was yet another attempt by the opposition to unseat the mayor, but without success. The coalition remains stable, and Kleinbergs can continue his work.
