An active cyclone is crossing the Baltic states, bringing prolonged and heavy rainfall. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has issued an orange-level warning that comes into effect on July 8 at 8:00 PM and remains in force until Thursday, July 9, at 8:00 AM. During the day, heavy rain is expected in western regions, spreading to central areas overnight. Locally, very heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible.
The centre warns that due to the large amount of precipitation, the soil will become saturated and unable to absorb water. Stormwater drainage systems may become overloaded and overflow. This is expected to cause flooding of river floodplains and low-lying areas. In some places, this could lead to flooding of property and infrastructure, as well as road erosion and other infrastructure damage.
In flooded areas, there is a possibility that evacuations may be necessary. Residents are advised to monitor the situation and follow safety instructions.
