Orange Warning for Heavy Rain Across Latvia: What to Know

LVĢMC has issued an orange warning from July 20 at 11:00 until midnight on July 21, expecting very heavy rain that may cause flooding and infrastructure damage.

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has warned of heavy precipitation expected tomorrow, July 20. An orange warning will be in effect across the country from 11:00 AM until midnight on July 21.

The intense rainfall may lead to flooding of low-lying areas and river floodplains, overloaded stormwater drainage systems, road washouts, and other infrastructure damage. Drivers should expect poor visibility and the risk of aquaplaning. Power, water supply, and communication disruptions are possible in some areas.

Residents are advised to monitor information on the website "bridinajumi.meteo.lv", follow instructions from emergency services, and call 112 in life-threatening situations.

Cyclone Impact

According to forecasts, a cyclone will cross Latvia on Monday, bringing cloudy and rainy weather. In the western part and northern Vidzeme, rainfall will be very heavy in places, possibly with thunderstorms.

Wind will mostly be light, but will strengthen along the coast and in Kurzeme, with gusts of 15–18 m/s, and up to 20–21 m/s on the Kurzeme coast. Air temperatures will reach +20..+24°C in eastern regions, with cooler conditions in the west at +15..+20°C.

In Riga, the night before Monday will be cloudy with clear spells and no precipitation. During the day, it will be cloudy with heavy rain in the afternoon and evening, possibly with thunderstorms. Wind will be light, gusty during storms. Maximum temperature +20..+22°C.
