Yellowing, wilting orchid? A common habit may be the culprit
A gardener explains that overwatering is the most frequent cause of orchid trouble, made worse in winter by low light, and offers tips on how to save the plant.
Orchids are among the most popular houseplants, but overly attentive care can easily damage them. Justin Hancock, a horticulturist at Costa Farms, told Real Simple that overwatering is the most common cause of orchid problems. Yellow, soft, wilted leaves usually signal that the plant is getting too much water. He recommends letting the growing medium dry out completely between waterings — in this respect, orchids behave much like succulents.
Low light can be misleading
Insufficient light can also cause trouble, and this is especially common in winter when daylight hours are shorter. Darker, softer leaves can indicate a lack of light. Low light also indirectly raises the risk of overwatering: in the cold season plants receive less sunlight, grow more slowly and use less water, so watering on a regular schedule can leave the soil too wet.
What to do if the plant is struggling
The first step is identifying the actual cause. If overwatering is to blame, let the soil dry out fully before watering again. If the problem is insufficient light, move the plant to a brighter spot, but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. If spots appear on the leaves, a fungal infection may be present — in that case, isolate the plant from other houseplants, remove the affected parts and thoroughly clean garden tools.
The gardener also notes that wilted flowers don't necessarily mean the plant is dying — if the leaves remain green and healthy, the orchid is most likely just finishing its natural blooming cycle. Phalaenopsis, the most common houseplant orchid, thrives in bright, indirect light, normal room temperature and slightly elevated humidity.
