Agnis Bušs, an ornithologist representing the Latvian Ornithological Society, has recommended the Mēmele River as an appealing destination for those who want to combine canoeing with birdwatching, particularly to spot colorful kingfishers.

According to Bušs, his personal favorite stretch is around the village of Kurmene. He explained that this section of the river offers a fairly strong current, making the canoeing experience itself enjoyable, alongside scenic views of dolomite outcrops along the banks.

Another advantage of the Kurmene area is the relatively high number of suitable spots where kingfishers can build their nests, which increases the chances of actually seeing these birds in their natural habitat.

The recommendation offers a practical tip for nature enthusiasts planning outdoor trips, suggesting that a canoeing excursion on the Mēmele can double as an opportunity for birdwatching.
