Ornithologist recommends the Mēmele River for kingfisher spotting
A representative of the Latvian Ornithological Society, Agnis Bušs, has named the Mēmele River as an excellent destination for paddling trips and kingfisher watching, highlighting the area around Kurmene in particular.
Agnis Bušs, a representative of the Latvian Ornithological Society, has recommended the Mēmele River as one of the best destinations for a nature excursion. According to him, it is a great choice for canoeing or paddling, and it also offers good opportunities to spot kingfishers.
Bušs named the surroundings of Kurmene as his personal favorite spot along the river. This stretch has a fairly strong current, making the paddling experience particularly enjoyable. Paddlers can also take in views of beautiful dolomite outcrops that line the riverbanks in this area.
The ornithologist pointed out that this section of the Mēmele has many suitable sites for kingfishers to build their nests. These colorful birds typically choose steep, sandy or clay riverbank slopes for nesting, and such conditions are common along the Mēmele. This makes the river a suitable place for nature lovers to observe the birds in their natural habitat while also enjoying the paddling experience itself.
The Mēmele is one of Latvia's rivers popular among water tourists for its terrain and scenery, and the ornithologist's recommendation adds to its appeal as a destination of interest for birdwatchers as well.
