New recreation area opens in Oru Park, Kohtla-Järve
A new recreation area has been completed in Oru Park in Kohtla-Järve, funded through a participatory budgeting initiative. The project cost around €50,000 and includes upgraded rest and grill spots, though no trash bins are provided.

The city of Kohtla-Järve has finished developing a new recreation area in Oru Park. The idea originated from local residents and won a municipal participatory budget competition in 2024. Implementation took roughly two years and total costs amounted to about €50,000.
During the upgrade, rest and grill areas were renovated. However, no trash bins have been installed in the zone, so the city asks visitors to keep the area clean and take their rubbish with them.
Aivar Kamal, head of the financial service of Kohtla-Järve, said: "In 2024 this idea was selected. It won by a very large margin. In 2025 we were cleaning this pond, we couldn't implement it. But in 2026, as promised, we directed the money into building this zone." He added: "There is a very nice terrace, there are grilling opportunities. You can spend a great time, sit around. And since the pond has become cleaner, now even fish live there. So those interested in fishing can try their hand."
