Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe has cancelled her wedding ceremony, which had been scheduled for Friday, after King Harald V of Norway died early that same morning. Her political adviser confirmed the postponement to the BBC.

Lindboe had planned to marry her fiance, Pål Sandvid, on the day the king passed away at the national hospital in Oslo, where he had been receiving treatment for a rare blood condition. According to her adviser, no new date for the ceremony has been set so far.

Tribute to the king

Following the king's death, Lindboe shared a tribute to him on Instagram, writing that it was hard to imagine Oslo and Norway without him and noting that he never needed a crowd to be king. She added that even most Norwegians who had never met him personally still felt they knew him.

King Harald reigned for 35 years before his death. His son has now succeeded him as King Haakon VIII of Norway, becoming the country's new monarch on Friday.

Lindboe and Sandvid had been together for five years before announcing their engagement this past June.
