Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko and her doubles partner, Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei, secured a spot in the second round of the US Open doubles draw on Friday.

Seeded fourth, the pair defeated Croatia's Darija Jurak Schreiber and Antonia Ružić in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The win earns Ostapenko and Hsieh 130 WTA doubles ranking points.

Next opponents

In the second round, the Latvian-Taiwanese duo will face Czech player Marie Bouzkova and Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Ostapenko has previous doubles success at the US Open — two years ago she won the title alongside Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok. Last year, however, partnering with Czech player Barbora Krejčíková, she was eliminated in the very first round.

Early exit in singles

In singles competition, neither Ostapenko nor fellow Latvian Daria Semenistaja advanced past the first round. The main draw of the season's final Grand Slam tournament, played on hard courts, concludes on September 13.
