Ostapenko to face Hungary's top player Udvardy in Eastbourne
Latvia's top tennis player Jelena Ostapenko will play against Hungary's No. 1 Panna Udvardy in the second round of the WTA 500 tournament in Eastbourne on Thursday.

Today's second-round match at the Eastbourne grass-court tournament will feature Latvia's leading tennis player Jelena Ostapenko and Hungary's top-ranked Panna Udvardy. Ostapenko is currently ranked 35th in the WTA, while her opponent is 71st, though Udvardy has previously climbed to 59th.
This season, Ostapenko holds a 17-13 win-loss record, while Udvardy is 18-17, including lower-level events. Since the start of 2025, the Latvian has an interesting stat: against Top 10 players she is 6-3, but against the rest she is 29-29. She also has extensive experience on grass, with a career record of 55-26, compared to Udvardy's 9-9.
Ostapenko's biggest career achievements include the 2017 French Open title and a Wimbledon semifinal in 2018. She has won nine WTA titles, including last year's Stuttgart "WTA 500" clay event. Udvardy, on the other hand, has yet to win a significant tournament, but she reached the second round at Wimbledon in 2022.
Ostapenko is competing in Eastbourne for the tenth time and won the title here in 2021. She is seeded third this year. Udvardy is playing here for the third time and has reached the Round of 16 for the first time. The match will take place in approximately 28°C heat. The winner will face Czech player Sarah Bejlek (45th) or Turkey's Zeynep Sönmez (54th) in the quarterfinals.
