Latvia's leading tennis player Alona Ostapenko did not finish her first match at the prestigious 1000-point tournament in Toronto on Tuesday. In the second-round clash, she conceded to China's Shuai Zhang with a scoreline of 0-6, 0-4, bringing her participation to an early end.

Ostapenko had a difficult start, losing the opening set without claiming a single game. She was unable to turn things around in the second set, and when the score reached 0-4, she stopped playing. That gave Zhang the win, while Ostapenko exited the tournament without a victory.

This was Ostapenko's first match in the Toronto event, despite taking place in the second round. It remains unclear why the Latvian player did not complete the contest. The result was recorded in favour of Shuai Zhang.

With this loss, Ostapenko ended her run at the tournament. The Latvian tennis leader had hoped for a better performance, but on this occasion her opponent proved stronger. The match quickly slipped away from Ostapenko, as Zhang dominated from the start. The scoreline of 0-6, 0-4 clearly indicated that Ostapenko could not match her opponent's level throughout the match.
