Latvia's top-ranked tennis player, Jelena Ostapenko (world No. 32), faces Belgium's leading player Elise Mertens (No. 19, a former world No. 12) in the next round of the Beijing tournament.
The two have met only once before, seven years ago, when Ostapenko won 4:6, 6:2, 6:2. This season Ostapenko holds a 23-19 win-loss record, while Mertens stands at 31-19.
