Ostapenko and Hsieh battle through three sets to reach Beijing WTA 1000 doubles second round
Latvia's Aļona Ostapenko and her Taiwanese partner Su-Wei Hsieh won a three-set first-round doubles match at the Beijing WTA 1000 tournament. Ostapenko is also having a strong run in the singles draw.

Latvian tennis player Aļona Ostapenko and her doubles partner from Taiwan, Su-Wei Hsieh, advanced to the second round of the doubles competition at the Beijing WTA 1000 tournament on Tuesday. Seeded third, the pair needed three sets to see off wildcard entrants and local players Jiang Xinyu and Wang Xiyu, winning 6-1, 1-6, 10-4, with the deciding set settled by a match tiebreak.
In the next round, Ostapenko and Hsieh will face Russian duo Irina Khromacheva and Lyudmila Samsonova. The run to the second round has already earned the Latvian-Taiwanese pair 120 WTA doubles ranking points.
Singles campaign also continues
Ostapenko is competing in the singles draw as well, where she has reached the third round. Seeded 24th and ranked 32nd in the world, she received a first-round bye before defeating former world number two Paula Badosa of Spain (ranked 59th) in two sets, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, in round two. Her singles run ended in the third round, where she lost in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, to Belgium's Elise Mertens (ranked 19th). For her singles results so far, Ostapenko has collected 65 ranking points.
The Beijing tournament is being played on hard courts and will conclude on Sunday.
