Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko and her Taiwanese partner Su-wei Hsieh went out of the women's doubles quarterfinals at the Beijing WTA 1000 tournament on Friday. WTA 1000 is the second-highest tier of the professional women's tennis tour, and the event in Beijing is played on hard courts and ends on Sunday. The third-seeded pair lost to New Zealand's Erin Routliffe and Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi 6-7 (5:7), 6-4, 7:10, so they will not reach the semifinals.

How the match unfolded

In the first set Ostapenko and Hsieh led 4-2 but lost the set in a tiebreak. In the second they recovered from 1-3 down to win it. In the deciding match tiebreak the Latvian/Taiwanese duo fell behind 1:7 at the start and could not close the gap. They did save three match points, but were unable to win.

What comes next

Routliffe and Sutjiadi will meet the tournament's top seeds in the semifinals: Czech player Katerina Siniakova and China's Zhang Shuai. That pair won their quarterfinal 6-2, 6-2 against fifth-seeded Australian Storm Hunter and France's Kristina Mladenovic.

The road to the quarterfinals

In the first round Ostapenko and Hsieh beat wild-card home pair Jiang Xinyu and Xiyu Wang 6-1, 1-6, 10:4. In the round of 16 they defeated Russians Irina Khromacheva and Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2. For reaching the quarterfinals Ostapenko earned 215 WTA doubles ranking points.

The Latvian also played singles in Beijing, where she reached the third round and earned 65 singles ranking points.
