Latvia's leading tennis player Jelena Ostapenko has been knocked out of the singles draw at the US Open, the final Grand Slam tournament of the season, after losing in the first round.
Ostapenko was defeated by Germany's Tatjana Maria in the opening round. The match was disrupted by rain and had to be spread across two days before it was completed.
Doubles campaign continues
While her singles run at the US Open has ended, Ostapenko remains in the tournament, continuing her campaign in the women's doubles competition.
