Weather forecasters are warning that Tuesday, September 1, will bring thunderstorms to much of Latvia, with some areas facing particularly intense downpours.

How the day will unfold

During the morning hours, thunderstorms are expected only in isolated areas, mainly in southern Kurzeme and Zemgale. By the afternoon, however, the storms are forecast to spread across a large part of the country. Forecasters note that in some locations, the amount of rain falling in a short period could match what would normally be expected over an entire month, raising the risk of flooding on streets, in yards, basements and other low-lying areas.

Hail and strong gusts possible

In some places the storms may also bring hail, along with strong wind gusts in certain areas. Overall, however, winds during the day are expected to be light and variable in direction.

Temperatures and the outlook for Riga

When the sun breaks through, air temperatures are expected to climb to between +18 and +23 degrees Celsius. In the capital, rain and thunderstorms are most likely in the afternoon, when gusty winds are also possible. Riga's daytime temperature is expected to reach around +20 degrees.

The unsettled weather is being driven by a low-pressure system, with atmospheric pressure at sea level ranging between 1009 and 1011 hectopascals.
