Gusty winds are forecast across Latvia on Tuesday, with gusts reaching 13-18 meters per second, meteorologists report. Strong gusts were already noticeable in the early morning, as westerly and southwesterly winds blew at 7-14 meters per second, reaching as much as 18 meters per second along the coast.
At 5:00 a.m., air temperatures across the country ranged from +12.1 degrees in Dagda to +16.1 degrees in Mērsrags. Relative humidity was high, at 80-100%, skies were mostly cloudy, and light rain fell in some areas. In Riga, the morning began cloudy, with southwesterly winds of five meters per second and gusts up to 13 meters per second, while the air temperature stood at just under +16 degrees.
Warmer afternoon, but winds persist
During the day, temperatures across Latvia will rise to +15..+18 degrees, though gusty winds of 13-18 meters per second will continue. Cloud cover is expected to thin starting in the northwest of the country, while light rain may still fall in some areas before midday.
In Riga, skies will gradually clear during the day with no precipitation expected. Westerly winds will blow with gusts up to 14 meters per second, and the air will warm to +17 degrees.
These conditions are being driven by the southern edge of a cyclone. Sea-level atmospheric pressure ranges from 1003 hectopascals in northern Vidzeme to 1011 hectopascals in southwestern Kurzeme.
On Monday, the maximum air temperature recorded across Latvia's observation network ranged from +11.1 degrees in Alūksne to +15.4 degrees in both Rucava and Ventspils. Elsewhere in Europe on October 5, the highest temperature was +33 degrees in Spain, while the lowest overnight temperatures were recorded in Iceland (-7 degrees) and Russia (-9 degrees).
