Latvia braces for stormy weather with heavy thunderstorms on Tuesday
Meteorologists warn that thunderstorms with heavy rain will sweep across much of Latvia on September 1, mainly in the afternoon, bringing risk of local flooding. Hail and gusty winds are possible in some areas.

Latvia is set for an unsettled Tuesday, September 1, as forecasters warn of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall spreading across large parts of the country, particularly in the afternoon.
Calm morning, stormy afternoon
During the morning hours, thunderstorms are expected only in isolated areas, mainly in South Kurzeme and Zemgale. Conditions are set to change in the afternoon, when rain and thunderstorms will affect a much larger share of the country.
Risk of flooding and hail
In the most intense storms, rainfall in a short period could match what is typically expected over an entire month, raising the risk of flooding on streets, in yards, basements and other low-lying areas. Forecasters also cannot rule out hail in some locations, along with strong wind gusts during storms, although overall winds throughout the day will be light and variable in direction.
Warm, sunny spells between showers
Despite the storm risk, sunny intervals will allow air temperatures to climb to between +18 and +23 degrees. In Riga, the highest chance of rain and thunder will come in the afternoon, with a maximum temperature of around +20 degrees and light winds, except during storms when gusts are possible.
The unsettled weather is being driven by a low-pressure area, with atmospheric pressure at sea level ranging between 1009 and 1011 hectopascals.
