Fog blankets much of Latvia on Tuesday morning, worst visibility in Zosēni and Bauska
Dense fog reduced visibility to under 200 meters in parts of Latvia early Tuesday, with the lowest readings in Zosēni and Bauska. Sun is expected to break through most of the country in the afternoon, though Latgale will see rain.
Thick fog covered many parts of Latvia in the early hours of Tuesday, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC). At 5 a.m., the poorest visibility — just 150 meters — was recorded in Zosēni, while readings of 200 to 350 meters were logged in Bauska, Gulbene, Priekuļi, Rēzekne, Saldus, Skrīveri, Stende and Zīlāni.
Air temperatures at that hour ranged widely across the country, from +3.6 degrees in Madona to nearly +14 degrees along the coast in Mērsrags and Daugavgrīva, as well as at the Port of Liepāja. The reading in Madona was the lowest recorded nationwide since the start of June. Skies were mostly cloudy with some clearing, while parts of Kurzeme saw brief rain — the heaviest rainfall over the past 24 hours, 41 millimeters, fell in Kolka. Winds were light from the north and northeast, calm in places, and air quality was rated very good.
Fog also affected parts of Riga, where early-morning temperatures ranged from +7 degrees near the airport to +14 degrees in Daugavgrīva. Monday's peak temperatures nationwide ranged from +14.2 degrees in Rūjiena to +18.7 degrees in Staļģene.
Afternoon change expected
Forecasters say a broader band of rain will move into Latgale from the southeast on Tuesday afternoon, while no precipitation is expected elsewhere in the country. As the fog clears, sunshine is expected across most of Latvia, though Latgale will remain mostly cloudy. Winds from the north and northeast will strengthen in the afternoon, with gusts reaching 9-15 meters per second. Temperatures will rise to +12..+14 degrees in Latgale and +14..+18 degrees elsewhere.
In Riga, sun and clouds will alternate with no rain expected, as light northeasterly wind shifts to moderate-to-strong northerly wind, with evening coastal gusts up to 15 meters per second. The city's high will reach +16..+17 degrees.
A high-pressure area dominates western and central Europe, while a cyclone sits over Eastern Europe with its center near the Belarus-Russia border. Atmospheric pressure in Latvia stands at 1014-1018 hectopascals at sea level.
