England, with four points from two games, aim to secure top spot in their World Cup group when they face Panama on Saturday. The Central American side, though relatively unknown, are an exciting team whose results do not reflect their performances. Against both Ghana and Croatia, Panama looked the better team at times, but the injury to their best player, Adalberto Carrasquilla, has hindered their ability to convert play into goals.

Coached by former Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen, Panama employs dynamic formations depending on the phase of play. They press aggressively in a 4-4-2 from opposition goal-kicks, drop into a 5-3-2 mid-block, and then into a deeper 5-4-1 shape. England relish playing against teams that push high, but Ghana showed that sitting deep without forward pressure can trouble them.

Panama's 5-4-1 has only four midfielders, making it vulnerable to quick switches of play across the pitch. Croatia's goal came from exploiting this width. England should keep their wingers high and wide to pull Panama's wing-backs out of position, creating space for runners between centre-back and wing-back.

Panama's defensive line is higher than Ghana's, opening up opportunities for balls over the top. If Harry Kane is allowed to roam, he can drop deep to play accurate passes into the space behind the defence.

On the ball, Panama shows technical quality, especially midfielder Cristian Martinez, but their attacks often end in crosses rather than through-balls. England's counter-pressing is a key strength, but if Panama can combine quickly in tight spaces, they could be dangerous.

Panama cannot qualify for the next round regardless of the result, which may affect motivation, but they will still aim to win. The coach may make changes to the lineup.
