Pandora Premium ad-free plan under $10: A hands-on look at its music discovery focus

Pandora's ad-free subscription costs less than $10 a month and stands out for music discovery, but it demands active user input and has noticeable interface flaws.

In an era of abundant music streaming services, one user decided to shift from Spotify to Pandora in search of a better music discovery experience. The author of a recent hands-on review notes that while Spotify offers a vast library, its recommendations often feel like an echo chamber, pushing familiar songs instead of new genres.

Pandora's answer to this is its Music Genome Project, designed to mix old favorites with new discoveries. After several weeks of exclusive use, the service impressed with its discovery-oriented features. The author found new songs and artists, and highlighted the 'Tune Your Station' option, which allows listeners to adjust preferences using parameters such as 'Discovery,' 'Deep Cuts,' and 'Newly Released.' A system of thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons also encourages active interaction with the algorithm. As an example, a Norah Jones station was adjusted into a jazz singer direction, featuring artists like Melody Gardot and Diana Krall, while pop-leaning tracks were filtered out. Even with a more passive approach, a station based on a Flipturn song produced similar new artists.

However, the service has notable drawbacks. Pandora requires more active involvement than its competitors, working best when users constantly rate tracks. Some obscure songs are not available for station listening, as shown by an error encountered with Ilusion De Amor by Jensine Benitez. The interface also has rough edges, particularly on a MacBook, where it failed to display the current track when minimized and did not support the Now Playing widget in the menu bar.

Despite these issues, the reviewer concludes that Pandora Premium, which costs less than $10 a month, may be exactly the right choice for those looking to expand their musical horizons without frequent ad interruptions.
