Paraguay's national football team advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals on Monday evening local time by defeating Germany in a penalty shootout. The achievement was so significant that President Santiago Peña declared Tuesday, June 30, a public holiday.

In his announcement, Peña stated that the holiday is "in honor of the historic victory of the Paraguayan national football team against Germany." This is not the first time a win over Germany has led to a public holiday—Ecuador also declared one after beating Germany 2–1 in the final group match, securing their place in the knockout stage.

The match saw Paraguay take the lead just before halftime, but German forward Kai Havertz equalized in the 54th minute. The score remained 1–1 through extra time, forcing a penalty shootout. Paraguay proved more accurate from the spot, while Germany made three errors in six attempts.
