Two Jelgava Educational Institutions Renamed: 4th Secondary School to Become Lielupe Secondary School
The Jelgava City Council has decided to rename two municipal educational institutions – the 4th Secondary School will be called Jelgava Lielupe Secondary School from September 12, while the 4th Primary School will become Jelgava Primary School. The new names take effect on September 1, 2026.

Jelgava's municipal council has approved the renaming of two local educational institutions as part of a broader strategy to phase out numbers from school names and create designations that better reflect the schools' identity, values, and development directions, according to the Jelgava Education Board.
Jelgava 4th Secondary School will be renamed Jelgava Lielupe Secondary School effective September 12. The name was chosen based on a community vote involving students, parents, and staff. Other contenders included Mītava Secondary School, Jelgava Jānis Čakste Secondary School, Jelgava Music and Sports Secondary School, and Jelgava State City Secondary School. The council noted that the Lielupe River holds symbolic significance for Jelgava's identity, and its continuous flow mirrors the school's development.
Meanwhile, Jelgava 4th Primary School will become Jelgava Primary School. Unlike the secondary school, this name was not chosen through a vote but after discussions in 2025 about the school's values and goals. The final name emphasizes belonging to Jelgava and clearly describes the institution's focus on primary education.
Both new names will officially take effect on September 1, 2026, following registration with the relevant authorities.
