A commemorative plaque for the Baltic Way was unveiled on Île aux Cygnes, a small island on the Seine River in Paris, on Monday. The ceremony was led by the Mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, alongside the Prime Ministers of Estonia, Kristen Michal, and Latvia, Andris Kulbergs.

The Estonian Embassy in France described the memorial as a symbol of unity, freedom, and courage. It honors the mass demonstration of August 23, 1989, when two million people formed a human chain over 670 kilometers long across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to protest the ongoing Soviet occupation. The protest took place on the 50th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, a secret agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that the Baltic Way was more than a human chain; it was a call for freedom and independence. He linked the protest to the current situation in Ukraine, saying, "Its message is just as relevant today: no agreements about Ukraine without Ukraine. No decisions about our region without the countries of our region. The time of Molotov–Ribbentrop-style deals must be over."

Mayor Grégoire remarked that the symbol resonates more than ever as Ukraine fights for the same values. Other attendees included Benjamin Haddad, France's minister delegate for Europe; Lithuanian MP Rasa Budbergytė; and Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of Latvia.
