Curfew imposed on parts of central Paris after violent protests
French authorities imposed a curfew on parts of central Paris from Monday night after weekend protests turned violent. The interior minister admitted police had lost control in several cities.
French authorities have imposed a curfew on parts of central Paris, covering Place de la Republique and the streets around the Les Halles district. It runs from 11pm on Monday until 6am on Tuesday. The measure follows weekend protests against the high cost of living and poor student conditions, which turned violent in several French cities.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez admitted that police had "lost control" of the protests in several cities over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Yellow Vest movement called for a new round of protests on Saturday.
Aftermath of the weekend
According to the interior ministry, which reported the figures on Sunday, nearly 2,400 people were arrested over the weekend. Nearly 1,000 police officers and gendarmes were injured. Town halls were burned down, and hundreds of businesses were looted or damaged.
French President Emmanuel Macron vowed on Sunday that there would be "full transparency" over the response by security forces. His pledge came after criticism that police preparations had been inadequate. Of the devastation caused by the protests, Macron said: "We all feel anger and shame."
