The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, has already produced a major surprise. On Friday, June 27, Cape Verde – a nation of approximately 525,000 people – became the smallest country ever to reach the tournament's knockout stage. The achievement came after a goalless draw (0-0) against Saudi Arabia in Group H.

In the same group, Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 (1-0), with Alex Baena scoring the only goal in the 42nd minute. His shot from about 13 meters deflected off Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera into the net. Muslera was substituted at half-time, replaced by Sergio Rochet. The win secured Spain's place in the knockout rounds, while Uruguay were eliminated.

England, who still have one group match remaining against Panama, have also guaranteed their spot in the playoffs. After three games in Group H, Spain lead with seven points, followed by Cape Verde with three, while Uruguay and Saudi Arabia each have two points.

In the first round of the knockout stage, Cape Verde will face Argentina, the current FIFA ranking leaders and defending champions from 2022. This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, divided into 12 groups. The top two from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, advance. The group stage concludes on June 27, with the knockout rounds beginning the following day. The semi-finals are scheduled for July 14 and 15, the bronze medal match on July 18, and the final on July 19.
