World Cup Quarterfinal: France vs Morocco for Semifinal Spot

France and Morocco meet in the World Cup quarterfinal today; the winner will face either Spain or Belgium in the semifinals.

Quarterfinal: France vs Morocco

Today’s World Cup quarterfinal features previous finalist France against Morocco. The match in Foxborough starts at 23:00 Latvian time.

France remains undefeated in the tournament. In the group stage, they beat Senegal 3-1, Iraq 3-0, and Norway 4-1. In the first knockout round, France defeated Sweden 3-0, and in the round of 16, they edged Paraguay 1-0, with Kylian Mbappé scoring the only goal.

Morocco began with a 1-1 draw against Brazil, followed by wins over Scotland (1-0) and Haiti (4-2). In the first knockout round, they drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in regulation; extra time produced no goals, and Morocco won 3-2 on penalties. In the round of 16, they beat Canada 3-0.

The two teams last met in the 2022 World Cup semifinal, where France won 2-0.

Mbappé has 7 goals, tied with Norway’s Erling Haaland for second place; Argentina’s Lionel Messi leads with 8. Morocco’s top scorer is Ismael Saibari with 3 goals.

The winner of this match will face the winner of Spain vs Belgium in the semifinals. Other quarterfinals: Norway vs England, and Argentina vs Switzerland.

This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, hosted in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The teams were divided into 12 groups; the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advanced. In 2022, Argentina became champions, beating France on penalties.
