World Cup Finale Marks Start of New Football Season on BBC Sport

BBC Sport has seen a surge in audience numbers during the current World Cup, with record visitors to its website and app. The broadcaster attributes this to its comprehensive coverage not only of football but also of other sports like Wimbledon, Formula 1, and cricket.

In response to user feedback, BBC Sport introduced several new features. These include a Shorts tab in the app for video content, a Predictor game, a 3D World Cup experience, and an "as it stands" projection for the knockout stage. Quizzes such as "Who Am I?" and live comments on match pages were also added.

Once the World Cup concludes, BBC Sport will continue to offer extensive football content. Coverage will shift to pre-season friendlies, transfer rumors, and club football. Dedicated reporters will follow every Premier League, WSL, EFL, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish club. Senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel will lead transfer news.

A new weekly Predictor game will launch immediately after the World Cup, allowing users to predict outcomes of five matches per week. The Shorts tab will become the primary video hub, featuring explainers, pundit analysis, interviews, and fan reactions. Live pages will incorporate Radio 5 Live audio commentaries for Premier League and Champions League matches, plus live video for the FA Cup.

BBC Sport will also provide highlights from men's and women's competitions, including Premier League, Champions League, Scottish Premiership, FA Cup, La Liga, Bundesliga, WSL, and Women's Champions League. The Scores & Fixtures pages will offer real-time updates across the football pyramid.

Users are encouraged to download the BBC Sport app and customize their experience via the My Sport tab. From the start of the new season, followers of Premier League teams will receive live notifications on their lock screens.
