World Cup 2026: Hosts USA qualify for knockout round after beating Australia

The United States advanced to the World Cup knockout rounds with a game to spare after an impressive 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle. This is the first time the US has clinched a knockout berth after only two matches. The US joins fellow co-hosts Mexico as the first teams to progress.

Despite the absence of star Christian Pulisic due to a calf injury, coach Mauricio Pochettino switched to a 4-4-2 formation, bringing in second striker Ricardo Pepi. The early lead came from an own goal in the 11th minute, when Australian defender Cameron Burgess steered the ball into his own net under pressure from Pepi.

Alex Freeman doubled the lead in the 44th minute, initially flagged offside but overturned by VAR. Freeman headed in from a free kick routine. Australia made three changes at halftime, including bringing on goalscorers from their opening win against Turkey, Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda. They pushed higher but could not find a goal.

Australia's best chance came from Cristian Volpato in the 62nd minute, but he shot over. Late pressure saw Metcalfe's shot saved, Irankunda brought down, and Geria's effort blocked. The US held on for the clean sheet and will face Turkey next, knowing their spot in the round of 32 is secured. With home advantage and strong form, US fans are dreaming of a run to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.
