World Cup 2026: Belgium stun Senegal with dramatic comeback and penalty heartbreak
Belgium overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time, advancing to the round of 16 after a late penalty by Youri Tielemans.

Belgium pulled off a stunning comeback against Senegal in the World Cup round of 32 on Wednesday evening in Seattle, winning 3-2 after extra time. Senegal dominated the first half, taking a 2-0 lead through Habib Diarra (24') and Ismaïla Sarr (51').
The introduction of Romelu Lukaku at halftime proved decisive. His presence troubled the Senegalese defense, and he pulled one back in the 86th minute. Three minutes later, Youri Tielemans equalized with a header from Thomas Meunier's cross, sending the match to extra time.
Extra time was tense, with both sides cautious. In the 117th minute, Lamine Camara fouled Tielemans in the box, and a VAR review confirmed the penalty. Tielemans coolly converted into the top corner, sealing Belgium's victory.
Belgium will face the winner of the USA vs. Bosnia match in the round of 16.
