World Cup 2026: Seattle set for Iran-Egypt match amid 'Pride Match' controversy
Seattle's stadium is expected to be filled with rainbow flags on Friday for a World Cup match between Iran and Egypt, coinciding with the city's Pride event and drawing objections from both countries.

Seattle's stadium is set to host a World Cup match on Friday between Iran and Egypt, two of the most repressive countries for LGBTQ+ people, while the city simultaneously celebrates its annual Pride event. The coincidence of the high-stakes Group G match with Seattle's 'Pride Match' has sparked pushback from both Iran and Egypt, which requested the Pride-themed celebrations be canceled in December. Seattle officials and the local football community see it as an opportunity to showcase the city's inclusivity and the unifying power of the World Cup. Jess Fishlock, captain of the National Women’s Soccer League club Seattle Reign, said this is what the World Cup is about — creating unity and diversity.
Same-sex relations are illegal in Iran, with executions reported, while Egypt has prosecuted LGBTQ+ individuals and suppressed expressions of gay pride. FIFA considers the rainbow flag a statement of human rights and will allow fans to wave it in the stadium, according to Hana Tadesse, a spokesperson for Seattle's World Cup organizing committee.
Iranian and Egyptian players and coaches avoided discussing the Pride Match on Thursday, focusing instead on the game despite persistent questioning from journalists. A statement read on behalf of the Iranian team said they would only answer questions related to the match. Egypt also barred its players from answering Pride-related questions, with coach Hossam Hassan stating they are focused solely on football.
The match has knockout implications: a win for Iran could see them advance to the tournament's knockout stage for the first time. Iran has also faced travel restrictions imposed by the US Department of Homeland Security due to the war in Iran. The Pride festivities include watch parties in some neighborhoods and a parade over the weekend.
