Suicide Bomber Kills 15 at Security Checkpoint in Northwest Pakistan

Pakistan's military reported on Friday that a suicide bomber, backed by armed fighters, targeted a security checkpoint in the northwestern part of the country overnight, resulting in the deaths of 15 security personnel. The attack occurred in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. According to the military, the assailants attempted to storm the checkpoint before ramming an explosives-laden vehicle into its perimeter wall, causing a powerful blast that severely damaged the site. The military's media wing stated that the victims included 12 military personnel, two police officers, and a government official from the former forest department. The military blamed the attack on the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), although the group did not immediately claim responsibility. The TTP is a separate entity but is allied with Afghanistan's Taliban rulers. Pakistan has long accused the Taliban government in Afghanistan of harboring TTP militants, a claim that Kabul denies. This dispute has intensified tensions between the neighboring countries, with Pakistan conducting airstrikes that it says target militants on Afghan soil. Afghan authorities and the United Nations have stated that dozens of civilians were killed in recent Pakistani strikes in eastern Afghanistan in June. Pakistan has seen a surge in militant attacks targeting security forces in recent years, with authorities attributing much of the violence to the TTP and allied groups.
