Pāternieki border checkpoint remains closed; carriers report losses

The Pāternieki border crossing point on the border with Belarus remains closed, reportedly because of a technical malfunction in its information systems. According to Latvian Radio, the problem first became apparent during the past weekend, when several trucks got stuck at the checkpoint. Their drivers were unable to re-register the required documents, and border officials suggested they use other nearby crossing points instead.

By Monday morning, 3 August, the situation had not changed. The technical problems had still not been resolved, and drivers continued to be unable to cross the border at Pāternieki. Kristīne Pētersone, a representative of the State Border Guard, confirmed this to Latvian Radio.

The closure has prompted the transport association to highlight that carriers are suffering financial losses as a result of the disruption. Freight companies face additional costs and delays because vehicles must seek alternative routes. No specific timeline has been given for when the checkpoint may reopen, and drivers are being advised to follow the latest instructions from border authorities.
