Missing Latvian tour guide's post from days before deadly floods now reads eerily

Viktorija Darakova, leader of a Latvian tour group that has gone missing in Nepal and a representative of the organization "Yantra.lv", published a Facebook post on 26 August whose words now carry unexpected weight following the disaster.

Alongside a video of a large waterfall, she wrote that on the way to Sagu, the group had stopped by a massive waterfall and simply stood in awe, overwhelmed by the force of the water, its roar, the spray, and the surrounding mountains. She added that in the Himalayas, nature constantly reminds people how much more powerful it is than they are, and that one simply wants to stand there and absorb that strength.

In the video itself, standing by the waterfall, Darakova remarks that a single drop of water means nothing on its own, but when such drops join together, they create immense power. Those words now sound particularly poignant given what befell the group only days later.

Devastating floods near the border

As previously reported, the border region between Nepal and Tibet was struck by sudden, devastating floods triggered by the collapse of a massive glacier mass. The collapse swept away rock and debris, unleashing a powerful torrent of mud and water. Nearly 3,000 people are currently missing, including the Latvian tour group led by Darakova. Relatives of the group members and their guide are anxiously awaiting any news of their fate.
